Exploring Chinatown in Jakarta is a highly recommended experience that offers a deep dive into the city’s rich cultural mosaic. Glodok, one of the largest Chinatowns in Indonesia, is known for its vibrant blend of tradition, commerce, and heritage. Originally known as “Pecinan” and referring to the Tionghoa or Chinese community, Glodok has long been a vital part of Jakarta’s identity. It sits within the Old City area, surrounded by historical sites left behind by the Dutch colonial era. During the 17th century, Glodok was used as an isolation zone by the Dutch to control the Chinese population due to their prominence in trade and business. Over time, it evolved into a thriving district filled with temples, markets, and a bustling street culture.

The tour offers an insightful experience of the Chinese-Indonesian journey—from their early arrival as trader-sailors to their challenges during colonial rule and economic crises, and eventually their success, particularly in business areas such as Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK). Walking through Glodok reveals the layered history of the Chinese community in Jakarta, from traditional medicine shops and temples to culinary streets and vibrant local markets. Visitors will get to witness how the Chinese community continues to shape Jakarta’s social and economic landscape, preserving old traditions while contributing to the city's modern business sectors.

This tour also provides a dynamic view of Jakarta by night, showing the contrast between the old and the modern city. Guests can explore the Old Town’s charm, visit iconic spots like MONAS (National Monument), and choose to dine either in an elegant restaurant or at a lively seafood market. The combination of cultural exploration, historical storytelling, and city sightseeing makes this tour truly special. For added convenience and comfort, a guide and driver are provided, each with distinct roles to ensure a smooth and informative journey throughout.

We loved our 4-hour food tour with Ms. Eti! She was organized, informative, and had a great sense of humour. It was great to get out of our hotel and have the confidence to visit a variety of areas and to taste an amazing amount of food. We also appreciated that Ms. Eti took photos of all the food and shared the labeled files via Google Drive, something that improved upon the food tours we had taken in other cities. We would heartily recommend Jakarta Walking Tour and Ms. Eti. Many thanks!

Fantastic experience with the Jakarta Walking Tour. I booked at the last minute the day before and Yupa replied within the hour and sent me a tailored itinerary. I had booked the Jakarta Cultural Religious Tour with Eti and loved it! She answered all my questions and alongside the landmarks we went to a market to try local delicacies (included in the tour fee). Did not feel rushed at all but we got a lot in. Eti also gave me recommendations for things to do after the tour. I definitely would not have been able to navigate all this by myself so really recommend. Very professional team and super personable ✨

Many years after covid I finally had a chance to have the Jakarta walking tour i had booked for early 2020 and never got around to doing until now. Compliments to Jakarta Walking tours for staying in touch all these years and honoring the old booking. We had a nice walk with Eti and she showed us some nice spots for food with a good combination of cleanliness and the locations still being local and interesting. She was helpful in understanding the culture and politics, but stayed professional, which is a bit of a shame. It would have been great to learn a bit more about her personal views on things. Also we had visited one of the locations without knowing the day before already and sadly she didn't suggest to change the itinerary. So flexible to a degree but also not deviating too much from the itinerary. It would be great if the tours would feel less like a professional tour but more like a walk with a friend.

It was a really nice tour. Our tour guide, Ms. Eti, is very knowledgeable about the local food. She took the three of us to food courts, street food stalls, and restaurants to try the delicious local cuisine. She introduced the ingredients and history of the foods she recommended, and they were all yummy. We also discussed the different food cultures of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, and Colombia. As a Chinese person, I was happy to discover that some local foods are influenced by Chinese cuisine. I even tried a Bajaj (a three-wheeled vehicle in Jakarta), which I had never had the confidence to try before. Now, I also feel more confident about trying local street food.

I had an amazing day with Eti! She knows so much about the city's history and culture. I got so much more out of my stay in Jakarta thanks to her. Organisation was top, I learned a lot and we had great snacks at china town! Totally recommend this tour!
